Ectropion

Ectropion is an outturned, or ‘saggy’ lower lid, which can leave the eye unprotected. It often results from normal aging changes, but can also occur after trauma, previous facial surgery or Bell’s palsy. Patients with ectropion often complain of tearing, irritated eyes. If it is left untreated, it can lead to crusting of the eyelid, mucous discharge and irritation of the eye (a gritty or sandy feeling).

Although the irritation associated with ectropion can often be managed with artificial tears or other lubricants, surgical repair can restore the eyelid’s normal anatomy.
