There are certain conditions that can result in inflammation and permanent scarring of the cornea. Superficial Keratectomy is a surgical procedure that removes and smooths the corneal surface. Corneal diseases that are commonly treated by a superficial keratectomy include the following:

• Anterior Basement Membrane Dystrophy (ABMD)
• Recurrent Corneal Erosion
• Salzmann’s Nodular Degeneration
• Calcific Band Keratopathy

A superficial keratectomy can be performed in the office or in an outpatient surgery center. After the surface of the eye is numb, the epithelial cells of the cornea are scraped away, exposing the underlying scar tissue or deposits. A bandage contact lens is placed to aid in healing and to provide comfort. The contact lens allows the natural healing process of the cornea cells to occur. The patient is prescribed eye drops to decrease inflammation and provide lubrication.
